Surviving — and then enjoying — your first Canadian winter
1 min read

People arrive braced for cold and are undone by something else entirely: darkness at four in the afternoon, an unheated entryway, and a car that will not start on the one morning it matters.
The three mistakes
- Buying a fashionable coat instead of a warm one
- Skipping winter tyres — legally optional in some places, practically essential
- Staying indoors, which turns a season into an ordeal
- Proper boots rated well below freezing
- Winter tyres fitted before the first snowfall, not after
- A block heater if you park outside
- One outdoor activity you genuinely enjoy — skating, hiking, sledding
Our second winter was easier than our first, and not because it was milder. We just knew what to do with it.
